The Discovery Center of Springfield, a hands-on science museum, was the first building in southwest Missouri to attain LEED Gold certification. Stormwater Management and Green Infrastructure
To address stormwater quality and reduce flooding, Springfield has invested in green infrastructure projects. The Fairgrounds Green Infrastructure Project, completed in November 2024, includes rain gardens with native plantings, pervious pavers, and a hydrodynamic separator to improve water quality. Additionally, the Renew Jordan Creek project aims to uncover approximately 1,200 linear feet of Jordan Creek, creating a mixed-use urban park and enhancing ecological conditions.
Community Engagement and Education
The city offers various programs to engage residents in environmental stewardship. The ‘Clean Green Springfield’ initiative encourages community participation in litter prevention and cleanup activities. Educational resources are also provided to promote proper waste disposal and recycling practices.
Environmental Workforce Development
Springfield has partnered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to offer the ‘Green for Greene’ job training program. Since 2016, this program has trained over 300 students in environmental workforce development, equipping them with skills for careers in environmental remediation and sustainability.
